David Bowie, Lou Reed, Talking Heads also tackled on covers album

Peter Gabriel fronted Genesis when they were astral prog travelers. He also did time as one of the weirdest, least likely pop stars of the 80s and early 90s, looking like a bank manager but cranking out hallucinatory art-funk videos like "Sledgehammer" and "Shock the Monkey". More recently, he teamed up with Hot Chip to cover Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa"-- a song that namechecks Gabriel himself. Suffice to say, Gabriel's weirdo credentials are fully in place.

Early next year, he'll reemerge with an orchestral covers album that will include Gabriel's versions of songs by Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, and the Magnetic Fields, as NME reports.

According to The Guardian, Gabriel's Scratch My Back is part of a "song-swap project" in which Gabriel will cover other people's songs, and they'll cover his. That means there's at least an outside possibility that we could hear Bon Iver take on "Red Rain"-- which would be awesome. According to NME, Scratch My Back, due January 25, is the first release in a planned series, so maybe the other folks covering Gabriel will come later.

Composer John Metcalfe tells the BBC that the album will be recorded acoustically, and that Gabriel will stick with orchestral instruments rather than drums or guitars. Says Metcalfe: "The songs are not simply covers. They are major reinterpretations of some famous stuff. It's quite radical ..."

NME has confirmed the tracklist, and it'll be fascinating to hear what Gabriel does with these songs:

Florida progressive band Cynic is currently working on a new EP that will include reinterpretations of 4 songs off Traced in Air (The Space for This, Evolutionary Sleeper, Integral Birth, King of Those Who Know), and 1 totally new song. Guitarist Tymon Kruidenier had this to say on the new EP:

As most of you already know we're working on an EP. We're reinterpreting 4 songs from Traced In Air: Space, King, Evolutionary and Integral, and we will record a brand new song. There's several reasons we're doing this. We're not done yet with TiA, the album has only been out for a little over a year and we feel the songs are still fresh. Besides that we want to try different production techniques and incorporate influences from different genres we all love, but which never had a place in Cynic. So I saw someone asked how "surprising" this EP could be? I would say: very surprising

11/9/2009 - Paris, France - One of music's most innovative and eclectic ensembles, Magma, will be releasing the final installment to their most recent epic trilogy. Titled Emehntehtt-Re, Magma's new opus will be released internationally on November 5, 2009 on Seventh Records. This marks the second trilogy by the legendary French band, the first being Theusz Hamtaahk. Magma was founded in Paris in 1969 by drummer Christian Vander, who derived his inspiration from a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" that profoundly disturbed him. Vander was a self-taught musician, who received some tips from drum legend Elvin Jones. In the course of Magma's first album, the band tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planet Kobaia. Later, conflict arises when the Kobaians, who are descendants of the original colonists, encounter other Earth refugees. A distinguished aspect of Magma's music is that Vander actually invented a constucted language, Kobaian, in which most lyrics are sung. Later albums told different stories set in more ancient times; however the Kobaïan language remained an integral part of the music

"In its message, as in its genesis and its making, Emehntehtt-Re is an intimate epic, an occult stride forward, a quest for the sublime. Initiated in 1975, its composition beholds its whole fulfillment after more than three decades. It is the testimony of an unwaveringly timeless inspiration, of which the expectant present asserts itself beyond history. Connecting wide and contrasted scenes, it sets its coherence within its very dynamics, playing with chiaroscuro, between choral splendor, operatic jubilation and hurricane of spirits beyond graves.

As much a seraphic liturgy as it is a telluric opera, Emehntehtt-Re comes as the final closure to a second trilogy, following upon that of Theusz Hamtaahk, in Christian Vander's corpus. This is a music reaching out from a time before man time. Born at the heart of nebulas, fed on mineral glow, and riding crypts capped with a cosmic vault." Bruno Heuze

When asked if the name Magma is part of Kobaian or does it refer to lava? Christian Vander replied, "Yes, it refers directly to lava. Back in 1966, I had written a piece and I was already in a band with Bernard Paganotti, who became a bass player. Already, I was searching for the right word. The tune I wrote back then was called Nogma. I was looking for the word Magma, but didn't know it was what I was looking for. One day the band didn't have a name at the time, and they were standing in fornt of a fairly well-known club in Paris. The club management told me if you don't have a name, you can't come and play tonight. So we went for coffee, at the shop next door. I thought deeply, you know, and the word Magma came out. At the same time, I founded Univeria Zekt. I wrote this down on the receipt from the coffee shop and kept it."

When asked where the music of Magma is derived, Christian explained to George Allen and Robert Pearson that "the music and the lyrics come up at the same time. If I am singing, and if it has to be in Kobaian, they come up in Kobaian. Sometimes there is a word that is maybe French or English and I leave it in because it is there, and it's natural. The lyrics come at the same time, parallel to the music. For pieces like Mekanik, they were not written in one shot or one session. I had to run a tape recorder to be able to capture it instantly- it goes very fast. I sing with new words that I don't know, and when I am improvising further, the same words come back, even though I don't know them. But I didn't learn them, they impose themselves on me."

Considered by many to be musically pioneering and imaginative, Magma makes extensive use of the choral format, their album Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandöh being particularly reminiscent of the classical composer Carl Orf, while Wurdah Itah reveals connections to Bela Bartok's piano music and "Les Noces" by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Reportedly, Christian Vander is also highly influenced by the work of jazz legend John Coltrane. "I am always listening and attentive to what they do," says Vander. "I am open to listen to what they do. But for my work, it is still Coltrane who actually gives me the real material to work on, to be able to move on."

Magma's new CD also comes with a 57-minute DVD, "Phases", as a testimonial to the intensity of the ensemble's work during its recording.

Zespół Balmorhea ogłosił podczas jednego z ostatnich swoich koncertów, że 23. lutego ukaże się ich nowa płyta. Welcome and a very Happy New Year to you all,

2009 was a brilliant year for Pendragon and 2010 looks set to be an even better one, with Pure still riding high in many charts and still getting great reviews.
We have some amazing shows this year including the High Voltage Festival in London which is set to be THE festival of the year , with ELP and ZZ Top headlining and a welcome return for Pendragon to America and Scotland!

Classic Rock Society Awards
Pendragon swept the board at the recent Classic Rock Society Awards in Wath, South Yorkshire. The first award was for best Classic Rock gig of 2009 which was at the Montgomery Hall last May.
The band then went on to scoop most of the Best Musician awards, Scott and Clive getting Best Drummer and Best Keys player, but were sadly not there to collect their trophies as they were in Bolivia working on Clive's She project. Nick said some words for them and they will be utterly over the moon about this as Scott said this is the first time in his life he has ever won anything for drumming, and Clive has been saying it's about time he won best key player again, and finally Nick took best guitarist..all awards were handed out by Gordon Gliptrap who was a helluva nice guy and dead funny!

Mariusz Duda is currently writing the material for the second album of his project Lunatic Soul.
This time it will be the "white album".

The recording of the album is planned for February and March and the expected release date is autumn 2010.

Zmarła ikona muzyki rockmetalowej. Ronnie rest in peace.

Żył niecałe 68 wiosen. Szkoda tymbardziej, że Dio dalej nagrywał - ubiegłoroczny album sabbs tfuuu Heaven and Hell, plany koncertowe na ten rok z zespołem m.in. czeski Sonisphere z metką i slayerem. Ehhh choćby za jedną z najlepszych płyt lat 80-tych (Heaven and Hell) czy albumy Rainbow należy mu się pamięć i szacunek na wieki.

SBB, a legend of Polish music scene, is working on a new studio album with the working title “Blue Trans”. The band, comprised of the phenomenal composer Józef Skrzek, the excellent guitarist Apostolis Anthimos, and the flawless drummer Gabor Nemeth, plans to release the new material in Autumn 2010 via Metal Mind Productions.

They are currently working in ResRublica Studios in Lubrza, again with Sebastian Witkowski, who produced their previous album “Iron Curtain”. The album, released in January 2007, was highly acclaimed by both fans and music media. The trio offered a perfect blend of the sincerity of blues and the freedom of jazz. The music was mature and rich in emotions. It featured sophisticated ballads, perfect guitar solos, oriental and highland sounds, Moogs and Hammonds.

SBB is no doubt a legend of Polish music scene. The band was formed in 1971 as Silesian Blues Band. Then, the musicians played for 2 years with Czesław Niemen in his group Niemen, to finally return as SBB in 1974. By 1980, Józef Skrzek, Apostolis Anthimos and Jerzy Piotrowski had recorded dozens of albums in Poland and abroad, they played hundreds of concerts all around Europe, sharing stages with Bob Marley (Roskilde Festival '7 Cool

, Soft Machine, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Charles Mingus Dynasty, Jack Bruce Group, Thin Lizzy, Canned Heat, Omega and Klaus Szultze. In the early 90's they returned in an extended line-up after an almost 10-year break to play a series of concerts in USA. SBB started as a blues band but, fascinated with Mahavishnu Orchestra, soon began to search for new means of expression. Gradually, their music became more and more lyrical and the band started to combine wild, Hendrix-like energy with peaceful, gentle, calm moments. The band soon came up with their own idea of prog-rock, skillfully mixing elements of classical music and jazz-rock instrumental frenzy. The albums that followed showed the band's great evolution, featuring grand and marvelous music. "SBB - Anthology 1974-2004" box and "Lost Tapes, Vol. 1", "Lost Tapes, Vol.2" constituted a certain summary of their career up to that point. The 2004 releases, especially the anthology, were received with real enthusiasm. It was the final "pro" for recording a new album "New Century" and for organizing a worldwide tour. In March 2006, SBB headlined Baja Prog Festival, one of the most important progressive festivals in the world. In late August 2007, Metal Mind Productions released a 20-CD box with Skrzek's complete solo discography. The anthology includes electro-rock songs, film music etc. The year 2007 saw the release of SBB's new album "The Rock". Soon after that, SBB released “Four Decades” DVD. In January 2009, the band returned with a new fantastic album “Iron Curtain”. The band promoted the release on several gigs in Poland. The highlight of the tour took place at Wyspianski Theatre in Katowice, where SBB recorded the show for the “Behind The Iron Curtain” DVD (may 2009).
